As part of a major investment in the site at Stockton, Warburton’s upgraded the existing, 20 year old, PLC system to improve reliability, and operability. The new system automatically logs each CIP and fill cycle with chemical usage, wash duration, conductivity, pH and wash media velocity data being recorded. The HMI replaced a “traditional” door full of lights and switches, as well as being accessible remotely via the Ewon for assistance with fault diagnosis etc. The project included a full set of documentation – FDS, test specification and operator manual

IPN are one of the UKs largest producers of pet foods, brands include Wagg and Harringtons. The project was a new conveying line transporting palletised loads and routing to either a reject spur or for despatch. The system was interfaced to the existing Cassioli warehousing conveyor system. The conveyor motors were all controlled via Profinet, including the safety functions. The system also had 3 Sick light guards for prevention of access by personnel.

MOWI are a major supplier of pelletised fish food to the salmon fisheries. In 2018/19 MOWI built a new plant to produce pellets in a former quarry at Kyleakin
The project consisted of programming / commissioning of a Webster Griffin PF4 bag filler with a pre-load hopper, conveyor system. The system interfaced to the plant control system via an anybus protocol converter to determine end of campaign / product changes
The bag filler was designed to fill 30 x 1Te bags per hour, in actual fact has far exceeded this!

Fine Lady Bakeries upgraded their cream yeast twin ring main system in 2019. The original system used 3 yeast tanks (2 main tanks, and 1 used during CIP of a ring main) and 1 CIP tank. The CIP system was therefore a total loss system.
Beswick Refrigeration Services (BRS) Ltd replaced the original mechanical only flow plate / swing bend system with a block of mixproof valves, replacing the pumps and upgrading the instrumentation.
The reconfigured system used the original 3rd yeast tank as a detergent tank to enable detergent recovery at the end of CIP.
The additional instrumentation (pH, conductivity, flow and temperature sensors) meant that the system can automatically log each stage of the CIP cycle for each of the 6 CIP routines – 2 each for Fill Lines, Tanks and Ring Mains.
HPS took the P&ID produced by BRS and produced a Functional Design Specification, detailing how the new system would operate, actions in the event of alarms data logged etc. This document was then reviewed and the coding started – the FDS remained live through the life cycle of the project.
HPS then wrote the PLC and HMI software and tested then commissioned it.
Finally HPS delivered engineers’ training on the system for all the maintenance teams

- Unitronics V1210
- Carlo-Gavazzi Dupline Modbus Generator
- Visilogic
ISP install smoke vent systems for high rise buildings. The client requested a Carlo Gavazzi Dupline system be installed to control the dampers and fans on each floor. A Unitronics V1210 was chosen because of it’s built in ModBus communications port. The PLC essentially uses the Dupline as distributed I/O and controls all the fans / dampers to the cause and effects requirements document in ladder logic. The V1210 also has a built in HMI which was configured to display the state of the system / make any timing adjustments
MSS Lasers Ltd, Rugby
- Unitronics USP-104-B10
- Unilogic
MSS Lasers build nitrogen generators (the NitroCube) for use with the laser cutting equipment, to create an inert atmosphere when cutting metals. By using a Unitronics combined PLC / HMI HPS were able to create a single point of control for the cube (which contains a nitrogen generator, dryer, a compressor and assorted instrumentation) The PLCs can easily be configured as web servers, which means they can be remotely diagnosed by MSS engineers.

Webster Griffin (WG) won the contract to supply a bagging system to Volac International. The system fills FIBCs with whey powder from the dairy. It consists of a pallet dispenser, sheet feeder, PF4 IBC filling machine, a conveyor system and associated safety system (light curtains / emergency stops etc)
WG used the contract as an opportunity to re-writE a large number of existing PLC code. HPS wrote a comprehensive FDS for the system and wrote, from scratch, new blocks to control the different elements of the system.
In order to minimise the time taken to commission on site the entire system was built at WG’s premises, demonstrated to the client, then taken to site and installed. HPS attended site for 3 days during the site commissioning, to make some minor modifications
